An Evening to Remember at Lodge of Fraternity No. 1418: Fellowcraft Passing, Solomon Diploma and a New Charity Initiative

Lodge of Fraternity 1418

The Lodge of Fraternity assembled for its regular meeting on Thursday 26 February 2026, and it proved to be an evening of real warmth, excellent companionship, and meaningful Masonic purpose. From the moment Brethren began to arrive, there was a clear sense that we were in for a memorable night: a well attended meeting, a valued official visit, an impressive ceremony carried out on behalf of a visiting Lodge, and a charitable initiative that resonated strongly with everyone present.

The Lodge was particularly honoured to receive the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W Bro Thomas Fred Gittins, PSGD, who attended on an official visit. His presence was a significant compliment to the Lodge and was greatly appreciated by all Brethren. W Bro Gittins was accompanied by his Director of Ceremonies, W Bro Michael Snowball, APGDC, together with his two Deacons, W Bro Allan Brittain and W Bro Steve Cherret.

Their attendance added a special dignity to the proceedings, and it was evident throughout the evening that the visit was as much about encouragement and fellowship as it was about formality. The Lodge was pleased to welcome the Assistant Provincial Grand Master and his team, and we are grateful for the time and support they gave to us.

A Degree Ceremony on Behalf of Universities Lodge No. 2352

A central highlight of the evening was the passing of Bro Adam Johnston Lambert to the Degree of a Fellowcraft, conducted on behalf of Universities Lodge No. 2352. It is always a privilege for the Lodge to support a Brother’s progress in Freemasonry, and on this occasion the work was carried out with care, attention, and a clear sense of purpose.

The Degree was delivered in a manner that reflected great credit on the Officers involved, and it provided an excellent reminder of what our ceremonies are designed to achieve: to instruct, to encourage self improvement, and to reinforce the values of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth in a way that is memorable and meaningful.

The Lodge is pleased to have played its part in Bro Adam’s advancement, and we wish him every success as he continues his Masonic journey. We also extend fraternal greetings to Universities Lodge No. 2352, and trust that our support was received in the spirit in which it was offered.

Another notable moment in the meeting was the presentation of the Solomon Diploma to W Bro Michael Stuart Shaw, an Assistant Provincial Grand Master, by W Bro Tom Gittins. The Solomon Diploma is a significant acknowledgement, and it was fitting that it was presented in open Lodge, allowing the Brethren to share in the occasion and recognise the commitment and contribution that such an award represents.

The presentation was conducted with clarity and sincerity, and it added further distinction to an evening already marked by high standards and positive spirit.

A Festive Board Enjoyed by All

As ever, the meeting was followed by an excellent Festive Board, enjoyed in the best traditions of the Lodge. The atmosphere was friendly, relaxed, and genuinely uplifting. Brethren and visitors alike shared good conversation, renewed friendships, and strengthened the bonds that make our Lodge life so rewarding.

Evenings like this remind us that the Festive Board is not simply an addition to the meeting, but an essential part of it: a space where fellowship is deepened, where newer Brethren feel welcomed and supported, and where the Lodge’s sense of unity is reinforced.

A New Charitable Initiative: Gold Anxiety Bears

One of the most talked about elements of the evening came during the Festive Board, when W Bro Tom introduced and explained a new charitable initiative. Drawing inspiration from the well known Teddies for Loving Care scheme, the initiative centres on Gold Anxiety Bears, which are given together with colouring books to individuals living with dementia, with the aim of helping to reduce anxiety and provide comfort.

It was clear from the response in the room that this initiative struck a chord. Many Brethren will have personal experience, directly or through family and friends, of the challenges that dementia can bring. The idea of providing something tangible and gentle that can offer reassurance, distraction, and calm is both simple and powerful, and it sits very naturally alongside the values of our Order.

W Bro Tom’s explanation was received with real interest and appreciation, and the Brethren were encouraged by the practical and compassionate nature of the project. It served as an excellent reminder that Relief can take many forms, and that small acts of kindness, thoughtfully directed, can make a meaningful difference.

Closing Reflections

In summary, the regular meeting of 26 February 2026 was an evening that combined strong ceremonial work, valued official support, recognition of Masonic achievement, and an inspiring message of charitable service. The Lodge was honoured by the presence of distinguished visitors, proud to support the advancement of a Brother on behalf of Universities Lodge No. 2352, and grateful for the opportunity to share in the presentation of the Solomon Diploma.

Above all, the evening was characterised by the very best of Freemasonry: good standards in Lodge, genuine companionship at the Festive Board, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact beyond our own walls.

The Lodge of Fraternity offers its sincere thanks to W Bro Thomas Fred Gittins, PSGD, W Bro Michael Snowball, APGDC, W Bro Allan Brittain, and W Bro Steve Cherret for attending and supporting the Lodge, and to all Brethren and visitors who contributed to such an enjoyable and purposeful night.

We look forward to our next meeting and to continuing the work of the Lodge in the same spirit.
